An odd reason not to consider the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.

I have read in a couple of places recently that some people are choosing not to buy the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin because its .9999 purity means it is easily scratched.

Its purity is the very reason I would choose it. You’re getting the purest gold possible. No other gold coin comes in a more pure form.

As for it being easy to scratch or dent the coin, that’s true.

But why would that be a problem? It’s not as if the coin is in daily circulation, being passed from hand to hand.

If you buy the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, it’s for its value in gold. You’ll either have it stored with your dealer, in a bank deposit box or in a safe place at home. And you’ll probably have it inside the plastic envelope or box in which it was delivered.

In other words, damage or even scratching is a non-issue. If you are concerned about that, don’t handle it.

In addition, a slight scratch or two isn’t going to reduce its value in any way. The value of gold bullion coins is tied to the purity of the gold and the weight of the coin.

Certainly, if you are collecting numismatic coins, that’s a whole different story. And yes, their value is certainly influenced by their condition. But that isn’t the case with bullion coins.

For my money, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is an excellent choice. You get .9999 purity with every coin. What you own is pure, 24 karat gold.
