The Mexican 50 Pesos has a long history behind it. It is also known as the 50 Pesos, or the Centenario de oro, and was originally issued in 1921. Any history buff will also appreciate the Gold Pesos more, as it was introduced to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of Mexico’s War of Independence.Mexican gold coins, and the Mexican 50 Pesos in particular, are no exception. Because they are made of gold, they will always hold a high monetary value. Beyond that, they are a great addition to any collection.
The fact is that this coin is well worth its purchase price for the gold contents alone. The historical value behind it only serves to increase its overall value. The face value of this coin is fifty cents, but as with any gold coin, its actual value far exceeds the face value.
Minted between 1921 and 1947, these coins continue to be relatively easy to obtain. Between 1945 and 1946 alone, more than two million coins were minted. The obverse of the coin features the Angel of Independence, and her image was inspired by Nike, the winged Roman God of Victory. Her right holds a laurel leaf, and her left hand bears the broken chain. Popocatepetl and Iztaccihautl, famous volcanoes found in Mexico, are featured in the background.
The foreground on either side of the Angel features the year of Mexico’s Independence, and the year minting was discontinued of 1947. The reverse side of the coin continues to pay homage to Mexico’s battle for Independence by featuring an eagle perched on a cactus, dining on a snake. This image symbolizes Mexico’s call to arms.
The words ‘ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS’ surround this image, a stirring reminder that Mexico became the United States of Mexico.
This coin is a fine addition to collections all over the world. And for those people with a true appreciation of history, or simply of Mexico, they are even more valuable. They are more than just a gold coin. They are an important part of our world’s history and of Mexican heritage.
