Do you need a set of scales to weigh your gold?
That depends on the types of gold you own, and plan to buy.
If you just buy bullion gold coins or bars, a set of scales isn’t really necessary. You know the weight of each coin, and the purity of the gold it contains.
If you are buying collectible gold coins, you might want to use scales to verify any coin you are thinking of buying.
Scales really come in handy when you are buying gold jewelry as part of your collection. When buying gold jewelry, the weight of each piece should be confirmed down to the nearest gram.
Plus, of course, you will have to do some separate calculations depending on the purity of the gold itself.
For example, a piece of gold jewelry that weighs 10 grams, but is made of 14 karat gold, doesn’t contain 10 grams of pure gold.

If you do decide to buy a set of scales to weigh gold, be sure to buy a jeweler’s scale, and calibrate it before use.
One of the more popular scales for weighing gold and jewelry is the American Weigh Signature Series Black AWS-100 Digital Pocket Scale, which you get at a good price from Amazon.com. (Pictured above.)
